Fractional SDR or outsourced SDR?

A fractional SDR is a part-time rep shared with other clients. An outsourced SDR function is a rep working your market full time, with a manager, the data and the platform behind them. What each one is, what each costs in kind, and which suits which market.

A fractional SDR is a sales development rep who works part of the week for you - commonly 10 to 25 hours - and the rest for other clients, usually as an individual contractor. An outsourced SDR function is a rep who works your market full time while they are on it, with a manager coaching the calls and the data, dialler and sequencing provided. Fractional suits a short list of accounts and a founder testing a market; a full-time function suits a market with hundreds of accounts to work and a target for meetings every month.

What a fractional SDR is

  • Part time: a set number of hours or days a week, shared with other clients.
  • Usually an individual, often experienced, working as a contractor rather than inside a team.
  • Usually working in your tools - your CRM, your sequencing software, your data - and managing themselves.
  • Priced as a monthly retainer for the hours. Published US ranges run from under $1,000 to more than $8,000 a month, depending on the hours and on what is included.

Where fractional works

  • A short, named list - fifty accounts rather than five hundred - where depth matters more than volume.
  • Long, account-based enterprise sales where a handful of conversations a month is the goal.
  • A founder who wants to test whether a market answers before committing to a full-time function.
  • A company with a sales leader who can manage the rep, and tools already in place.

Where it struggles

  • Volume. A cadence across phone, email and LinkedIn needs daily attention, and part of a week runs out quickly against a few hundred accounts.
  • Follow-up. The fourth and fifth touches are the ones that get the reply, and they are the first to slip when attention is split between clients.
  • Coaching. A contractor working alone has nobody listening to the calls; whether they improve is up to them.
  • The stack. If the data, dialler and sequencing are yours to buy and run, the retainer is not the whole cost.

How to choose

Count the accounts and the meetings you need. If the list is short and the sale is long, a good fractional SDR, managed by someone who knows the market, can be the right answer and the cheaper one. If the list is long, the target is monthly and nobody in the business has time to coach a rep, a full-time function with its own manager and platform does the job a part-time one cannot. The readiness check helps with the first question, and the cost calculator prices the in-house alternative.

Questions about fractional SDRs

What is a fractional SDR?

A sales development rep who works part time for several companies at once, usually as a contractor, prospecting and booking meetings for each in their share of the week.

Is a fractional SDR cheaper than an outsourced SDR?

The retainer usually is, because it buys part of a week. Whether the cost per meeting is lower depends on the list: on a short account-based list it can be, and on a long one the hours run out before the cadence is finished. Add the data and tools a fractional rep needs if you do not already have them.

Does Caption offer fractional SDRs?

No. Our reps work your market and no one else’s while they are on it, with a manager and the platform included. If a part-time rep would suit your market better, we will say so on the call.

Fifteen minutes. No pitch.

Bring the market and the size of the list. We will tell you whether it needs a full-time rep, and say so if it does not.
