AI SDR or human SDR?
The question buyers are asking this year. Our answer is not either: the AI belongs in the platform, doing the research, the enrichment and the queue, and the person belongs on the phone, where the meeting gets agreed. What each is good at, what each is not, and where the line sits.
An AI SDR is software that researches prospects, writes and sends outreach, and sometimes replies, at a volume no person could match. A human SDR holds the conversation - on the phone, in the reply thread, in the objection - and qualifies the person on the other end. The engagements that work in 2026 use both, and are clear about which does which.
What the AI is good at
- Research at scale: reading a company’s site, news, hiring and posts, and turning it into a reason to call before anyone dials.
- Enrichment: finding and verifying the right person and their contact details, and re-checking them when they go stale.
- The queue: ordering the day by who is likely to pick up, and re-sorting the board when the signals change.
- First drafts: an opening line built from the signal, for a person to edit and send.
- Consistency: the fourth and fifth touches that a busy person forgets, sent on time.
What the AI is not good at
- The phone. Prospects can tell, and a meeting is agreed in a conversation, not a thread.
- Judgement in the reply. "Not now, we just hired someone" is an objection to a person and a closed ticket to a script.
- Qualification. Deciding that this person, at this company, with this problem, is worth your closer’s hour is a judgement that needs to have been wrong before.
- Deliverability at volume. Automated email at scale is how domains end up in spam folders, and the damage is to your name, not the tool’s.
- Being trusted. Buyers have learned what automated outreach reads like, and many delete it unread.
Side by side
| Aspect | AI SDR tool | Human SDR (in-house or outsourced) | Caption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research and enrichment | Strong, at scale | Slow by hand | Done by the platform, overnight |
| Email volume | High | Low | Moderate, written per person at reply length |
| The phone | None, or synthetic | Yes | Yes, from a queue the platform built |
| Handling a reply | Scripted | Judgement | Judgement, with the research in front of them |
| Qualification | Rules | Judgement against your criteria | A rep, coached, against criteria you set |
| Deliverability risk | High at volume | Low | Managed: warmed domain, moderate volume |
| Who improves it | Nobody, or the vendor | A manager, if you have one | A Caption manager, daily |
| Cost shape | Software subscription | Salary plus stack plus management | One agreed figure, all in |
Where we draw the line
Setta, our platform, does the work that should be automated: the intent signals, the waterfall enrichment, the overnight research, the queue, the sequencing and the reporting. The reps do the work that should not be: the call, the reply, the qualification, the handover. The manager listens to the second half and corrects it every day. That division is why a rep of ours starts the morning on a dial rather than a spreadsheet, and why the person on the other end of the phone is talking to a person.
If you are choosing between an AI SDR subscription and a hire, the honest comparison is neither of those against each other; it is what the software can do for a rep who already knows the job. That is the version we run.
Questions about AI SDRs
What is an AI SDR?
Software that does parts of a sales development rep’s job on its own: it researches prospects, writes and sends outreach, and in some tools replies to responses. Most are email-led; a few add LinkedIn, and very few make phone calls.
Can an AI SDR replace a human SDR?
For the research, the enrichment and the timing, largely yes. For the phone, the reply that needs judgement and the decision that a meeting is worth your closer’s hour, not yet. The teams getting results use the software to prepare the work and a person to do the conversation.
Are AI SDRs worth it?
They can be, for a high-volume offer that email alone can sell. For a considered B2B sale to a senior buyer, the risks are the ones in the table above: deliverability at volume, replies handled by a script, and buyers who have learned what automated outreach reads like.
Do AI SDRs make phone calls?
Some tools offer synthetic voice calls. In the UK, automated marketing calls need the recipient’s specific consent under PECR, so an AI calling a prospect cold is a legal problem as well as a trust one. The cold calling page sets out the rules.
How does Caption use AI?
Inside Setta, our platform: the intent signals, the waterfall enrichment, the overnight research, the queue and the sequencing. Our SDRs make the calls and handle the replies, and a manager listens to the calls every day.
