Lead generation

B2B lead generation that ends in a meeting, not a list.

Lead generation means different things to different providers: a spreadsheet of contacts, a stream of enquiries or a qualified meeting in your diary. What each one is, how we generate them, the rules on emailing businesses in the UK, and the questions that tell providers apart.

A lead is only as useful as what happens next. Most B2B companies do not need more names; they need more conversations with the right people. We generate leads the way a sales team would: find the companies with a reason to buy, reach the person who decides, and turn the conversation into a meeting.

A list, a lead and a meeting

AspectWhat it isWhat is still left to do
A contact listNames, titles and emails that match a filterThe research, the outreach, the follow-up and the qualifying
A marketing-qualified leadSomeone who has shown interest - a download, a webinar, a replyFinding out whether they can buy, and whether they want to
A sales-qualified leadSomeone who fits and has a need, confirmed in a conversationBooking the meeting
A qualified appointmentA meeting in your diary with a decision maker who meets the criteria you setRunning a good meeting

We work in the bottom two rows. Who does which job is in SDR, BDR, AE: who does what, and the glossary has the rest of the vocabulary.

How we generate them

  1. A board, not a list.

Companies chosen by what they are doing - a new CIO, a second site, an audit due, a data team being hired - rather than the industry code they sit in. You see the board before anyone is contacted.

  2. The right person, verified.

Waterfall enrichment across several data providers for the direct line and the work email, checked before either is used.

  3. Three channels, one cadence.

Call, email and LinkedIn in sequence, written from the signal on each company rather than from a template, with emails short enough to get a reply.

  4. A conversation that qualifies.

An experienced rep, coached by a manager on live calls, finds out whether the need is real and the timing is right.

  5. A meeting, handed over.

Booked into your calendar under your name, with a note on what was said.

Emailing businesses in the UK: the rules

B2B email is lawful in the UK, with conditions. This is a summary, not legal advice.

  • Companies, LLPs, Scottish partnerships and some government bodies are corporate subscribers. They can be sent marketing email without prior consent, as long as the sender says who they are and gives a working way to opt out.
  • Sole traders and some partnerships are treated as individuals, and need to have consented, or to fall within the soft opt-in - broadly, existing customers who were offered a way to opt out when their details were taken and in every message since - before they are emailed.
  • A named person’s work email is still personal data under UK GDPR. B2B prospecting usually relies on legitimate interests, which needs an assessment, and anyone who objects to direct marketing has to be taken off - that right has no exceptions.
  • Keep a suppression list and check every send against it. The ICO prefers suppression to deletion, so that someone who objected is not picked up again from another source.
  • Since 5 February 2026 the maximum fine for breaking the email rules has matched UK GDPR.

How to compare lead generation providers

  • What exactly do you hand over - a name, a lead or a meeting - and how is it defined?
  • Who makes the calls, and who listens to them?
  • Whose name are you prospecting under, and whose domain does the email come from?
  • How do you screen against the TPS and CTPS, and how is the suppression list kept?
  • What do you report each week, and can I see the same screen you see?
  • What do I keep when we stop?

There are twelve of these in how to choose an outsourced sales provider, and the options are laid side by side on the comparison page.

What it has produced

More than 1,400 appointments booked and more than £270m of pipeline generated across the campaigns we have run. Some of the individual campaigns:

  • LGN.AI - £22.2m of pipeline built from the accounts opened, and £2.8m closed out of it.
  • Trustifyer - more than $12m of pipeline, for a category that was not a budget line a few years ago.
  • NeverBland - £475k of pipeline from more than forty fully qualified meetings.
  • Metapraxis - group finance leadership at multinational scale, and more than 800 new US accounts opened.

In their words

Caption have been a partner to our new business effort rather than a supplier of meetings. As our priorities moved between web, e-commerce and marketing work, they rebuilt the targeting and the messaging each time and kept the quality of the conversations up. They put a rep on our own domain, ran their own qualification calls before anything reached us, and chased prospects on our behalf when we needed them to. Several of the introductions they made are clients of ours today.

Questions about lead generation

What is B2B lead generation?

Finding and engaging businesses that may buy what you sell, so that your sales team has conversations to have. It can end in a list, an enquiry or a booked meeting; we measure it in meetings.

Do you sell lists of leads?

No. Data is something we use, not something we sell. The board of companies we build for you is there to see and argue with before any outreach starts.

Which channels do you use?

Phone, email and LinkedIn, on one cadence. The phone does most of the qualifying; see cold calling.

How is this different from an outsourced SDR?

It is the same function described by what it produces. An outsourced SDR is the person and the process; the leads and the meetings are the output.

How soon will we see leads?

The first dial is around three weeks after the brief, and the first conversations and replies arrive that week and the next.

You do not need more names. You need more conversations.

Send the brief. We build the board of companies with a reason to buy, and show it to you before anyone is contacted.
