SDR job description: a UK template you can use.

A sales development representative job description for a UK B2B company, section by section, with the 2026 pay ranges, the numbers to put in it, and the parts most adverts leave out that the best candidates look for.

A good SDR job description says what the rep will do each day, who they will be calling, what they will be measured on, what they will be paid, and who will coach them. The last two are the parts most adverts leave vague, and they are the parts experienced candidates read first. The template below is written to be copied; change the words in square brackets.

The template

Sales Development Representative - [Company], [location or hybrid pattern]

The role. You will start the conversations that become [Company]’s new business. You will research and contact [job titles] at [type and size of company] across phone, email and LinkedIn, find out whether there is a reason to talk, and book qualified meetings for our [account executives / founders]. You will report to [name, title].

What you will do.

  • Research the accounts on your list before you contact them: what has changed, who decides, and why now might be the time.
  • Call, email and message decision makers on a set cadence, and hold the first conversation.
  • Qualify each conversation against criteria we agree in writing, and book the meetings that meet them into the closer’s diary.
  • Write a handover note for every meeting: who, why this company, what they said, and what they agreed to.
  • Keep the CRM accurate enough that someone else could pick up your accounts tomorrow.
  • Tell us what the market is saying back, so the messaging and the list get better each week.

What you will be measured on. Qualified meetings held - not booked, held - with people who fit the criteria. The target is [number] a month once you are fully ramped, after [number] months. We will also look at conversations a day and conversion from conversation to meeting, as a way to coach, not as the target.

What you will need.

  • [Six months / a year or more] in a role where you spoke to customers or prospects. B2B sales development is helpful, not essential.
  • Comfort on the phone with people more senior than you.
  • Clear, short writing. You will write more emails than you send.
  • The habit of changing your approach when the numbers say it is not working.

Pay. £[base] base, £[on-target earnings] on target, commission paid [monthly] on meetings held. [Pension, holiday, other benefits.]

How you will be supported. [Name] will listen to your calls every week and review your pipeline with you. You will have a direct-dial data source, a dialler, a sequencing tool and Sales Navigator from day one. [Training plan for the first month.]

How to apply. [How, and what happens next, with dates.]

What to put in the square brackets

  • Pay. Published UK ranges for 2026 put an entry-level SDR at £28,000 to £32,000 base and £34,000 to £42,000 on target, and a mid-level rep at £35,000 to £40,000 base and £45,000 to £55,000 on target. London adds fifteen to twenty per cent. Adverts that state the range get more of the candidates you want.
  • The target. The Bridge Group’s 2025 median is ten held meetings a month, nine where meetings must be fully qualified. Set yours from your market, and say whether it is booked or held.
  • The ramp. Three months is the average to full productivity. Saying so in the advert tells a candidate you know what the first quarter looks like.
  • Who they call. Name the titles and the type of company. “Decision makers” tells a candidate nothing about whether they will enjoy the calls.

What the job description cannot fix

A job description finds the person. It does not coach them, build their list, or buy their tools. The two things that decide whether the first SDR works are a manager who listens to the calls every week and a clear definition of a qualified meeting before the first dial. If neither is in place yet, hiring your first SDR covers what to settle first, and the SDR cost calculator shows the full first-year cost, including the management time.

If you are weighing the hire against an outsourced team, outsourced SDR vs in-house SDR sets the two side by side.
